Girls Crash into Lake following Bad GPS directions
Three young women escaped a sinking SUV after a direction from a rental car GPS unit sent them down a boat launch and into the Mercer Slough early Wednesday.
The driver apparently thought she was on a road while following her GPS unit just after midnight, but she was actually heading down the Sweyolocken boat launch.
“We’ve seen sitcom parodies of something like this and to actually see it is surprising,” said Lt. Eric Keenan with the Bellevue Fire Department.
The road was dark and the driver crashed the SUV into the water in Mercer Slough Nature Park.
“I don’t know why they wouldn’t question driving into a puddle that doesn’t seem to end,” Keenan said.

The Garmin Nuvi 780 Fully Loaded
The Garmin Nuvi 780 device is among the high end GPS products provided by Garmin. If the high end features supplied by the device are of use to you, it might show to be a reliable product similar to any other Nuvi. Although it has its own share of downsides, the brand identify and the service are of considerable significance. It is a well known fact that after the additional features build up on any system, the basic use of it takes a second place and this gadget is not any exception.
The first thing the driver finds about this Garmin Nuvi 780 is that the touch screen is much quicker. The interface is also especially consumer friendly and appeals to consumers of all age groups. The Garmin Nuvi 780 Web Updater software is just like the gadget, simple to use and thus makes updating the firmware a very simple undertaking. The updates can be used to increase the variety of voice options and languages in the system by simply downloading them to it. The image view is better within the display and the various options present are a lot better than these of the earlier models. The pronunciations are highly accurate and consequently, don’t bewilder the driver. The menu structure is also quite simple when compared to its alternate options and it’s potential to go to any display from the present screen, which is very convenient rather than having all of the menu choices in layers. Additionally, different points may be added to a particular route such as food, fuel station and so on with very fast searches.
The speed limit onscreen displayed by the machine is very accurate and does not deceive the driver. Whilst purchasing the Garmin Nuvi 780, the MSN direct cable may be purchased at an extra 20 bucks as a substitute of shopping for it individually for a hundred. There’s a trial service accessible for MSN direct which could be employed to the maximum and determining whether to commit. It can be used to acquire live traffic and weather up to date when traveling. The MSN is always ahead of the radio in giving traffic updates. Stock prices and movie times can also be checked through MSN direct and be of a terrific service to the user. Gas price updates are additionally given to help the driver. The gadget will go for a recalculation of the route routinely after realizing that the traffic is excessive or the road is blocked. Additionally, Points of Interest may be added to the GPS utilizing Mapquest and Google Maps.
The time taken by the unit to sync to satellites to begin with could be pretty prolonged and worrying. The voice prompt can be late occasionally which may add to the uneasiness. The Bluetooth capability of the gadget is not up to the mark as it does not sync with all types of cellular phones. The volume can be lacking and so is the FM transmitter as it showed a lot of background noise. The algorithm of shorter route does not work precisely and the location refresh rate isn’t especially fast. The MSN direct is just available in the big cities at present. So it doesn’t make a lot of sense spending the extra cash on it anywhere it does not work.
If the additional options of the GPS are definitely needed, the Garmin Nuvi 780 is a wonderful system and gives all the benefits of owning a Garmin Nuvi 780 GPS product.

Reviewing the Navman Brand of GPS Systems
When you look for GPS devices for the road, you may look at 2 or 3 brands and quickly realize that you are clueless regarding which brand to get. This is particularly confusing in cases where you are searching for a product that offers affordability and portability. The range of models found in your local store might not be extensive, which might induce you to explore on the internet and hope to find more options. Once you’ve looked, you’ll be surprised at the amount of GPS manufacturers are actually out there. Navman GPS products are an example of the makers that you aren’t likely to encounter normally for the reason that they have no shops in the United States and Canada, but plenty in the the British Isles and Australia. Still, Navman’s present line-up of devices seems pretty impressive. Another great model to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 1200 Portable GPS Navigator.
Navman F15
The Navman F15 seems to be the one Navman GPS unit that is available in the US and, naturally, US maps including Puerto Rico are provided. Even though the Navman F15 wouldn’t be considered a widescreen product, the 3.5” touch screen along with its simple user interface make it a very easy to use gadget overall. Installing the device turned out to be less complicated than most other GPS units, which usually need some minor electrical work just for it to work like you need it to. Both of these advantages easily define the F15 as a handy device for drivers to get started with GPS navigation in general.
Unfortunately, the navigation capabilities in general may disappoint many consumers because it usually won’t be as accurate as many other American made GPS devices on the market. There could be some times where you seem to go around in circles, but you’ll hear some stories of this product being spot-on, so it might be influenced by the area you’re traveling in. Your Navman’s points of interest may include some popular restaurants and gas stations, but the saturation of POI’s offered with Navman’s software are nowhere near the amount of data that larger GPS brands incude. The abbreviated battery life coud be a setback as well, but ought to be no surprise seeing as this specific GPS unit isn’t that expensive. Notwithstanding the drawbacks, the Navman GPS remains a practical investment as a result of its straightforward user interface and functions and its effectiveness in planning the fastest route and locating addresses.
Navman S35
The S35 provides the same 3.5 inch screen as is found on the F15, and the frame looks quite attractive and it continues to be nicely portable. The S35 is made just for use in Austrailia, having in excess of 500,000 points of interest within the country and offers the text-to-speech capability which correctly pronounces place names employing an Australian accent. It additionally offers a mileage expense reporter which could be excellent for customers who want to manage gasoline expenditures better. The most up to date maps of 2008 are also included.
Navman S45
The Navman S45 has the same set of operations and aesthetics as the S35, except that the screen is wider; measuring 4.3 inches. Despite the widescreen feature, the model seems to be relatively portable. A comparable model is the Garmin Nuvi 1200 GPS Navigation System.
Navman GPS devices are restricted in variety, but they all attempt to be suitably portable yet also reliable. They reached their goal in keeping an attractive and portable shape, but they could make some improvements on the accuracy side.

Robot using GPS to navigate
This is a small robot of which I put together and coded.
It is run by a Basic Stamp 2 microprocessor coded in PBasic.
The chassis is an old RC car with all the electronics removed, only wires and motors left.
For the GPS data I used a Garmin Foretrex 101 and for object avoidance I used ultrasonic rangers.
Still has room for improvement, but it is a good start.
