Brand new to geocaching and wondering what GPS to buy?
I am new to geocaching and wondering what handheld GPS to buy. I was wondering what experiences you have with the Garmin eTrex H. I am looking for something fairly inexpensive. And I am also wondering where to find the best deals on GPS. Thanks
I have an iPod touch but you need to have wifi for it to work.
I just bough a used Garmin eTrex Legend on Amazon.com for $79.
A lot depends on your budget. You can buy GPS units as low as $75 and as much as $600 or more. For Geocaching, Garmin is the ONLY way to go. They are by far the most innovative when it comes to implementing geocaching specific features. Magellan does not even come close. Plus, Garmin has great support.
I would start by visiting the Garmin website and then click “On the Trail” or even better, go to this page on the Garmin site below specifically setup for gecocaching users. On that page, you’ll find a link to the “Geocaching Product Guide” which will show you all the Garmin GPS units that have enhanced geocaching capabilities.
I would not recommend anything less than the eTrex Vista HC or HCx. Here’s why: Color screen, microSD card memory, USB-computer connection. But you’ll find less expensive and more expensive models with less/more features. The new Oregon looks promising, but at the time of this answer is too new and still too expensive IMO.
Good luck to you!

You got my attention, because I am also interested in Geocaching. Not too many people know about it even.. I don’t own a GPS but I go with my brother on some hunts. He told me to look on ebay for some cheap ones but I have no clue what to look for in them or what kind to buy. I wanted to see what others told you but I will have to come back. I will give you a star for asking a good interesting question that I would have also asked eventually. Have a great day, sorry I can’t help you other than giving you a star.

I have been very pleased with my Garmin eTrex Vista. It is pocket sized and you can buy a very good Topo map for it if you are going to be doing any off-road geocaches.
