I just started geocaching and found my really old Garmin Etrex H. I know how to use it still, but I can not get it to give me a good reading anywhere. I mean, it knows which direction im moving if i move fast. But if I just turn, the compass doesn’t work. Are there any tips out there for this gps? I went to find 4 caches today and didnt find one. Im about to give up. (Google maps seems to work better)

The Etrex does not have a magnetic compass. Direction can only be determined by moving via the GPS function.

If you turn, but remain in the same spot, the GPS says you are at the same location and thus cannot determine compass direction.

You shouldn’t have to move a lot to get a compass direction. 10 feet or less.

I was told about an activity that is similar to geocaching, but instead of getting coordinates and needing a GPS system they give you a list of clues that you have to follow to find the box. I swear they called it "Shadowboxing" but I have looked that up and everything similar and can’t find what she was talking about. Does anyone know what this is? I don’t know if it makes a difference, but we live in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Yes, it is letterboxing. Just as geocaching has its "collectibles," a big part of letterboxing is the use of rubber stamps to mark the logs in the letterboxes you’ve found and to stamp your personal log book with the stamp the owner has left in the letterbox. The stamps are never taken as swag and are only used to stamp your book.

As a side note, I’ve accidentally found a handful of letterboxes while hunting caches when they were coincidentally hidden close together.

I am looking to buy a decent hand held unit for Geocaching. But I want something fairly easy to use, but also won’t break down or lost signals. Thank you.

Most GPS units are easy to use. A lot will depend on how much money you are willing to spend. The Garmin eTrex series offer a few cheaper units, the sky is the limit after that. A few suggestion of features: A unit that will allow you to down cache co-ordinates directly into the unit. That is an absolute must unless you want to manually enter that info. Most people like to get away from carrying paper copies of cache details, so a unit that can store data appeals to them or a cheap pda that you interface with you PC. I use a Garmin 60CSx myself and so do any number of the cachers I know. It is good but lacks the data storage area, so I carry an old Palm iQue 3600 pda for cache details and as my backup GPS. I would suggest a unit with mapping. Hope this helps you out. Feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

thanks! i’ll have to check out the garmins!

Just go with the cheapest, most basic Garmin ETrex you can get (by far has the BEST battery life). I’ve seen them on sale for $99.

It worked just fine the few times I took kids out geocaching, and I’ve used the heck out of it for the past 6 or so years hiking and exploring with great results. Just make sure you get the following:

1. a cable that will connect the GPS to your PC

2. a PC program to upload / download and manage waypoints to and from your GPS. There are some basic programs for free on the internet.

Lots of luck. You’re going to have LOTS of fun.

PS: Also, always take a regular magnetic compass if you go out in the woods…just trust me on that one.
